Police: Oak Lawn Shoplifter Rumbles With Loss Prevention Officers at Tinley Menards

Police detained a man over the weekend who they said was placing Menards' merchandise in his pockets.

Loss prevention officers struggled to detain an Oak Lawn man Saturday afternoon who they said stuffed razors, a candle and a leather pouch in his pockets before leaving the store without paying.

Daniel M. Vorberg, 29, of the 5000 block of West 101st Street in Oak Lawn, was arrested around 2:40 p.m. at Menards, 6851 159th St., . He was charged with one count of retail theft and two counts of battery, according to reports.

said loss prevention officers were watching Vorberg while he was in the store because he was "acting suspicious," "looking around to see if anyone was watching him," and "manipulating the packaging on products in his hands."

They eventually saw him turn a corner and then noticed that none of the items he was previously holding were in his hands anymore, according to the report. He then left the store.

Two loss prevention officers followed him out and said, "Excuse me, store security," according to the report. Police said that Vorberg ran from the officers and was detained until breaking free and shoving both of them in the chest and yelling, "You're not taking me anywhere!"

Loss prevention officers detained him again but when they were about 40 feet from the store's doors, Vorberg escaped again.

" … He took an aggressive, combative stance in that Vorberg clenched both of his fists and appeared like he was going to strike (the loss prevention officers)," the report said. "(One of them) immediately grabbed Vorberg and the two of them fell into a storage shed that was for sale outside the Menard's store."

A leather tool pouch and a glass candle fell out of Vorberg's sweatshirt pockets, the report said. An off-duty sheriff's deputy ran from the store and helped the officers get Vorberg to the security area until Tinley Park police arrived.

They found a box of MiracleGro, Gillette razor blades and a tan clip pouch in his pockets, according to the report. Police said Vorberg told loss prevention officers that he "was drinking last night and thinks he may still be drunk."

The total price of the stolen items was $42.59, the report said.
